Feng Zhenghu, a Chinese Citizen, Has Now Been Stranded
in Narita Airport for 65 Days!

Feng Zhenghu is a Chinese citizen. He was denied entry into China by the Shanghai government, and has been stranded in Narita Airport, Tokyo, Japan since Nov 4, 2009. As of Jan 7, 2010, he has been living there for 65 days. He slept on the couch at night, with no shower, and there was no food for the first several days. He could only live by tap water. Now he lives on food donated by people entering Japan from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, overseas Chinese and foreigners. He is a Chinese citizen prohibited from going back to his own country, and the reality show of the movie “The Terminal”.

Feng Zhenghu holds a valid Chinese passport, and his household registration is in Shanghai. He left China legally on April 1, 2009 for Japan. On June 7, 2009, when he went back to Shanghai, China, he was denied entry by the border control police in Shanghai. So far, he has been denied entry for 8 times. Feng Zhenghu was not allowed to go back to China, and the authorities did not present any documents, legal background, or any reason for doing so. The only thing they have is the oral order of the Shanghai authorities. An oral order from the authorities is capable of barring a Chinese citizen from going back to his own country.

On Nov 3, 2009, Feng Zhenghu went back to China for the 8th time, and when the plane landed at the Pudong Airport, Shanghai, he was arrested and on the next day he was forcibly placed on the returning flight by the Shanghai police and the All Nippon crew. He was kidnapped back to Japan. Therefore, Feng Zhenghu refused to enter Japan because he wanted to maintain his human dignity. He protested over human rights violations by the Shanghai authorities, demanding the Chinese government to exercise its obligation to protect the Chinese citizen’s rights and allow him to go back to China.

Feng Zhenghu graduated from Fudan University in 1986 with a master’s degree in economics. He worked as a teacher at Shanghai University of Finance, and was the president of the China Business Development Institute. He later studied in Japan. He has been a law-abiding citizen and supporting the “human first, power for people, and rule of law” policy of the Chinese government. Why the Shanghai authorities prohibits him from entering China? Because he had been helping Chinese petitioners, people who lost their homes to forcible demolition and people who were subjected to unfair treatment in defending their rights, and published a magazine named “Corruption Watch” that reported on government corruption and unfair judiciaries, and compiled a caseload of unfair court decisions in Shanghai.

Feng Zhenghu has declared that he has voluntarily given up his Japanese work visa to be able to go back to China. While the UN High Commissioner for Refugees contacted him and advised him to apply for UN refugee status, he declined. He said, “ I have my own country, and China is my home country. I am a Chinese, and also a Chinese intellectual. I bear an obligation to my country. Now, I want to go back to China, and to be able to go back to one’s home country is the basic human right. The Chinese authorities not only have violated the UN Charter and the International treaties on human rights in prohibiting a Chinese citizen from going back to China, but also have violated the Chinese Constitution and laws. I understand that I would be subject to sufferings in China, but I still want to go back to my home country.”

Feng Zhenghu’s effort to fight for his rights to his own country have won great respect from people in China, overseas Chinese, as well as people around the world. Regardless of whether they are Americans, Canadians, Germans, Japanese, or people in other countries, regardless of their religious belief, political views, color, race, they have offered to help him out of humanity. However, what are the Chinese government officials doing right now? They have relentlessly prohibited a responsible Chinese citizen from going back to his country eight times, and now they shrugged their shoulders at the torture and humiliation a Chinese citizen is suffering while he is sleeping on the couch at the Customs Office in Japan. They don’t care about the humiliation that the nation is suffering.

Feng Zhenghu’s incident has shocked the world. Media from the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, Australia and many other countries have been covering the event, and the internet has been reporting and distributing the tragedy of the Chinese people. People in Mainland China and overseas Chinese are overwhelmed by the incident. This is the shame of China. Although the Chinese authorities blocked news from spreading in China, more and more people in mainland China are still able to learn about Feng Zhenghu and his story thanks to software to bypass the Great Firewall.

The tragic story of Feng Zhenghu makes it hard for people in other countries of the world to understand, how is it possible to bar a citizen from going back to his own country? Even if he is a criminal, he should be allowed to go back to his own country to stand trial. If China wants to be a strong and responsible country, it has to be responsible to its citizens first. The Chinese government extends both its hands to people in the world and overseas Chinese to China, and the World Exhibition, there is no reason at all to deny a Chinese citizen, a Shanghai resident, the right to go back to China.

Please support Feng Zhenghu, a Chinese citizen, in fighting for his rights to go back to his own country, so that he reunites with his wife, and his 90-year-old mother.
